U-527 MACHINIST'S MATE DEATH NOTICE
U-527 MACHINIST'S MATE DEATH NOTICE
Rare partly-printed D.S., 1p. large 4to., "In the West", July 6, 1944, notice that Machinist's Mate Heinz Will "died a hero's death for Fuhrer, Folk and Fatherland" on June 23, 1943, signed by an unidentified senior officer. Folds, else very good. U-527 had undertaken two patrols when, on July 23, 1943, she was sunk south of the Azores by Avenger aircraft from the carrier USS Bogue. Pilot Robert L Stearns dropped four shallow-set depth charges as the sub made for cover in a bank of sea fog. The pressure hull aft was blown open, and U-527 sank instantly with 40 of her crew of 53 going down with her.
