U-352 WRECK-RECOVERED BINOCULAR RELIC
One half of a pair of binoculars, 3 1/2" x 4 1/2", recovered from the wreck of the German submarine U-352. This segment, the left handgrip, still contains two interior optical elements and mirrors, although the lens and eyepiece are missing. The artifact is stamped with the mark of the maker: "Carl Zeiss - Jena", as well as other identifying marks: "D.F. 7x50 2114479". It also bears the Nazi eagle and swastika, although the eagle has been partially obliterated, also with markings: "M IV/1". The U-352 was sunk off the coast of North Carolina by the U.S.C.G. Cutter ICARUS, with the loss of 15 of her 48-man crew. The wreck still lies in 115 feet of water. Good salvaged condition.
