<B>President Tyler Transmits the Congressional Resolution Annexing Texas.</B></I> Historic Autograph Letter Signed by son and private secretary John Tyler, Jr, one full page, 8" x 10", President's House [Washington], March 3, 1845. To Andrew Jackson Donelson, the U.S. <I>charg d'affaires</B></I> to the Republic of Texas. With typed transcription. Signs of mounting on verso, but otherwise fine. With two Sam Houston Autographs, as follows: <B>1).</B></I> Excellent Autograph Letter Signed, as Attorney General of Nashville, one page, 8" x 10", Lebanon, May 6, 1819. To His Excellency the Governor of Tennessee, Joseph McMinn. With typed transcription. Some browning, chipped at two corners and repaired at folds on verso, but overall so bold and legible as to be very good. <B>2).</B></I> Huge Signature with paraph, one page, 6" x 8", Texas, February 26, 1833. Houston's signature is 5" long and 1.5" in height, and his paraph, some 5" by 2.5" inches. All three autographs are bound in a buckram folio, entitled in gilt, "Texas. Autographs of Sam Houston... President Tyler's Letter of Annexation." The autographs are tipped-in, the transcriptions pasted down, and the volume, in fine condition. <BR><BR>The big news here, as everywhere it must be, is Texas. In a hand as bold and sprawling as the 28th state, John Tyler Jr., at the behest of his father, writes from the "President's House" to the United States <I>charg d'affaires</B></I> in Texas, transmitting the Joint Resolution of Congress annexing Texas: "<I>Permit me to introduce to you my cousin Floyd Waggaman the Bearer of the Joint Resolution annexing Texas to the United States.</B></I>" Because the Congressional Joint Resolution reached the President just days before the expiration of his term of office, Tyler was in a lather, as he put it, "that the facts which transpired during the last three or four days of my administration, relating to the annexation of Texas, should be preserved in authentic form" and so, in order to avoid delay - and any ministrations of incoming President James Polk - he had the Resolution and the instructions dispatched to Donelson by a special messenger, the aforesaid Floyd Waggaman. <BR><BR>The flip side of this lot, however, is almost as bright: here Texas' own leading light, Sam Houston, formerly a Lieutenant under Andrew Jackson, accepts appointment as an Adjutant General. "<I>I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the appointment of Adjutant General of the State of Tennessee. I avail myself of this most speedy opportunity of notifying Your Excellency of my willingness to accept the appointment. And beg you will accept my warmest expression of gratitude for the honor you have been pleased to confer on me. You will please receive assurances that my best exertion will be exercised in the discharge of all my incumbent duties.</B></I>"
