Eerily pensive vintage sepia 8 x 10 gelatin silver portrait of Cobb in a three-piece suit, boldly signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Warren Stulb, ‘With kindest regards’ Ty Cobb, June-1-31.” Some light silvering to darker areas of image, scattered light surface creases to bottom portion, and some mild foxing, otherwise fine condition.

The Georgia Peach was not known to hand out “kindest regards” lightly; obscenity-laced comments, perhaps, but not good wishes. Yet one Warren Stulb warranted precisely that kindly message. At the time he signed this photo, the nation was in the midst of the Great Depression, Cobbs’ stellar career was behind him, and his wife had started what was to be the first of several divorce proceedings. Perhaps Cobb was overcome with a bit of...kindness...in acquiescing to the request. The Stulb family may have been acquainted with Cobb in some manner, as the 1920 U.S. Census lists a “Warren Stulb,” born about 1919, living in Dooly, Georgia, with his parents, Lawrence and Emma L. Stulb. Cobb, as his nickname warrants, was born in Georgia. An unusual, uncommon portrait.
