The first horn is a full sized powder horn at 12 in. in length. The horn is cow and has a straight grain end plug with staple hardware. The plug is anchored with dome top nails. The stopper is a late replacement, as is the leather short strap. This horn has not been used. The smaller of the two horns is the real gem; this horn is about 6 in. long and has been made where the pilgrim can hold it to the sunlight and see how much powder is left in his priming horn (which is historically correct). The plug has been painted vermilion red as well has the throatand carries hand made nails. The stopper is a late replacement. This horn has been engraved with the depiction of a horse, a deer, and a long tailed animal. This primitively engraved horn has been scrimshawed by either a needle or another sharp instrument. This horn; used for priming a flintlock rifle then would be vintage 1800-1840.
