A) Manufactured circa 1857. All open-piece cast iron frame and long bag shaped handle made integral. The patent relief marking is cast on the right side of the frame: "WM. S. BUTLER'S PATENT / PATENTED FEB. 3, 1857".

B) All one-piece cast iron frame and long bag shaped iron handle made integral. The two line patent date raised relief marking is featured on the right side of the frame. It reads, "WM. S. BUTLERS PATENT PATENTED, FEB 8, 1857."

A) Good. The pistol has a smooth dark patina with extensive minor spotting and approximately 20% of a protective coating remaining. There is a large dent on the right side near the butt. The hammer spur has been welded back on.

B) Good. There is a smooth gary patina on the barrel with a darker patina on the remaining surfaces. There is some minor pitting, with most of the pitting concentrated in the area around the hammer.
