Two U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Sabers
1) U.S. 1840 Saber, 35 1/2 inch double fuller blade with 1856 dated ricasso. Brass hilt, with a two branch guard, Phrygian helmet style pommel and leather-covered wood grip with twisted brass wrap wire. This is an Ames production saber. The reverse ricasso is stamped "U.S." and the inspector initials "R.H.K.W" are stamped on the top of the pommel. The scabbard drag is stamped with the inspector's initials "A.D.K." 2) U.S. Horstmann 1840 Saber, with undated 36" blade. Both sabers have the correct iron scabbards.

1) Very fine. The hilt has most of the gold plated finish. The leather grip cover is completely intact and the wire wrap is tight. The blade is in excellent condition with nearly all of the original bright finish. The scabbard has a dark patina with dents and clear inspection marks. 2) Good. The blade has most of the original bright finish with scattered age discoloration. The brass hilt has a mellow patina. The leather grip cover is flaking and the wire wrap is loose with a small missing section near the pommel. The iron scabbard is in good condition with heavy pitting on the drag and tip.
