A) Manufactured 1866 to 1873. The top of the barrel is marked "SOUTHERNER" and "MERRIMACK ARMS & MFG CO/ NEWBURYPORT, MASS / PATENTED APRIL 9, 1867" on the left. The barrel was blue, the brass frame silver plated and it is fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips.

B) Manufactured from 1866 to 1873, this brass frame model is marked "SOUTHERNER" on the top barrel flat and " BROWN MF'G CO / NEWBURYPORT, MASS / PAT APR 9 1867". The serial number "2773" is marked on the bottom of the barrel and on the butt. The barrel, hammer and trigger were blue and the brass frame silver plated. The barrel pivots sideways to load and there is an extractor mounted on the underside of the barrel. Brass blade front, no rear sight, checkered hammer, smooth spur trigger and smooth rosewood grips on a square butt.

A) Fair. The barrel has a silver gray patina with small patches of minor pitting. The frame shows unfinished file marks and has an attractive aged patina. The grips are fine with a few minor dents and dings. The markings are clear and crisp. The action is fine.

B) Very good, The barrel has been cleaned to a bright gray metal with scattered pin prick pitting. The frame has a dark, natural even patina. The grips are very good with a few minor dings on the bottoms, a small chip on each heel and a few minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
