[Periodicals]. Mason & Co. MASON’S COIN AND STAMP COLLECTORS’ MAGAZINE. Philadelphia: Vol. I, No. 2 (May 1867). 8vo, original printed wraps. 9-18 pages. Near fine. [with] Leal, C.E. [editor]. THE published monthly in the interest of coin collectors. Paterson: Vol. I, No. 1 (September 1886). 8vo, original gilt-printed brown wraps. Folded for mailing. Near fine. The second issue of Mason’s first periodical, and the first issue of a short-lived magazine that is only accidentally famous. The second title is best known today for events that transpired after it had ceased publication. In 1888, Dr. George Heath titled the first issue of what became the official publication of the American Numismatic Association, The American Numismatist. Thereafter the name was shortened to The Numismatist, probably to avoid conflict with the publication at hand, which had ceased publication several months earlier.
