<B>Two San Juan Buffware Jars</B></I><BR>Circa 1930<BR>(A) Height 6 1/4 in. Diameter 8 3/4 in.<BR>(B) Height 7 1/2 in. Diameter 8 in.<BR><BR>The first example is characterized by a flat base, flaring sides, and a high shoulder tapering to a short neck. The jar is made of micaceous clay decorated with incised linear designs in rectangular, triangular, and chevron patterns. The rim and underbody are polished.<BR>The second example is characterized by a flat base, flaring sides, high shoulder, and a tall neck. This jar is also made of micaceous clay and decorated with incised linear designs in castellated bands around the center and a chevron pattern around the shoulder. The body is lightly polished while both neck and underbody are unpolished.<BR>The incised pottery popular with San Juan artists was based on prehistoric examples excavated at the nearby Otowi ruins.
