<B> Two Rutherford B. Hayes Autograph Letters Signed,</B></I> "<I> Rutherford B. Hayes</B></I>". The first, one page, 5.5" x 8.5", Freemont, Ohio to a Captain Luckey, formerly of the 3rd Ohio Volunteers. Former President Hayes, himself a Civil War veteran, here seeks information about a missing Union soldier. The letter reads, "<I> Can you tell ma anything about this man Clapp. Please return the letter with your facts. The R.R. man came by eight earlier than was expected. I am sorry not to get the R.R., but a man so much wearried (sic) could barely build it</B></I>". The verso of this letter, indeed, contains information on Clapp as requested and states that he is buried at the Nashville Military Cemetery. Light stains, minor split on one crease, else Fine condition. The second letter, one page, 5.5" x 8.5", Freemont, Ohio, July 11, 1888 to J.L. Clapp. It reads, "<I> I am not able to learn as to the Regiment or the death of young Clapp. After interviewing Maj. Stall I wrote to Capt. Luckey as you see. The boy is remembered here as a young fellow before the war but not afterwards. He must have found some of the Regiment</B></I>". Light browning and, again, a small split on one fold.
