Comprising cabinet
card photographic portraits of Grand
Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich (1832-1909),
youngest son of Emperor Nikolas I, and his
eldest son, Grand Duke Nikolas Mikhailovich
(1859-1919). Each within an ornate Pan Slavic
frame of simulated ivory made popular during
the reign of Alexander III.<p>
Signed in Cyrillic Mikhail and
Nikolas Mikhailovich, each dated
1893. Each with photographer?s credit
stamp, the reverse of the first in
Russian: Photographer of His Imperial
Highness, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich, E.

Size of each image: 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. (17.1 x

Grand Duke Mikhail was
born in Peterhof in 1832, the fourth son of
Emperor Nikolas I. As Viceroy of the
Caucasus and a general in the Crimean War,
he proved a strong and passionate military
leader. He conducted a typically lavish grand
ducal lifestyle in his many palaces, in St.
Petersburg, Tiflis, and in Mikhailovskoe on
the Baltic. His summer residence on the
estate of Borzhom, now a natural parkland in
Georgia, was roughly the size of Holland.
His son Grand Duke Nikolas, the first of six,
was born in Tsarskoe Selo in 1859. A
