Gerhard Hirsch fled the Nazis in 1934, moving to Prague. His career there was cut short, however, by the German occupation in 1939. He survived Auschwitz and lived to establish the firm that still bears his name in the 1950s. Regarding the first catalogue, apparently Winterstein was an employee of Hirsch’s responsible for translating the catalogue from German into Czech; he failed to do the job well, and Hirsch took his name off the catalogue.
