Two Plaster Reliefs ‘The Seduction of Helen’, Italy, c. 1900
These two plaster casts are replicas after original antique reliefs with scenes from the Greek mythology which are today in the possession of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, Italy. One relief shows ‘The Seduction of Helen’. Aphrodite persuades Helen with the help of Pheito, to leave her husband king Menelaus to marry prince Paris of Troy, to whom she had promised Helen. Her maneuver finally leads to the famous Trojan War. The two ladies are facing a winged Eros and Paris. The second relief shows five dancing Maenads under colonnades, whose finely pleated garments reflect the dynamic movements of the ancient beauties. All figures have their names inscribed.

Both casts are in an age-related condition showing signs of age and use such as loss of colour and material. The square relief shows on the reverse a label with the inscription ‘Paris & Helena v. Aphrodite & Eros zusammengeführt, Museo Nazionale Neapel ‘.Some cracks were fixed at the reverse side with black tape. The dimensions of this relief are 70 x 73.5 cm, the rectangular relief measures 42 x 92 cm. (cru)
