Two Pieces, 1797 Washington Presidency Relinquished Medal by Sansom, designed by John Reich, Uncertified. Baker 71-A. Diameter 40.7 mm. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Obverse with a civilian bust of Washington to the right, his name and office around; the reverse depicts a sword and fasces reposing on a pedestal with legend and date 1797. Only 308 examples of this variety were made from restrike dies engraved at the Mint in 1859 under the direction of James Ross Snowden, at the height of the Washingtonia craze. A second medallion is included with this lot, appearing to be a turn-of-the-century restrike, possibly a third striking.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
