A) Manufactured without a nipple shield and with fluted barrels. Four shot barrel cluster with "ALLEN & WHEELOCK" marked on one flute and "PATENTED / 1845" on another flute. The left side of the bar hammer is marked "ALLEN'S PATENT. / JAN 18, 1857". The frame has the broad scroll engraving. Matching serial number on frame, hammer spring, barrel clusters and both grips.

B) Rare three barrel pepperbox manufactured by the Manhattan Firearms Co. The pistol features a three shot manually rotated 3 inch 28 caliber smooth bore barrel. The pistol is marked "MANHATTAN F.A MFG.CO. / NEW.YORK" in two lines on the left side of the hammer and "CAST STEEL" in one of the barrel flutes. The frame is decorated with simple scroll engraving on the sides. The pistol has two piece, bag shaped, walnut stocks.

A) Fine. The barrel cluster and hammer retain 30% original case colors with the balance a smooth gray patina with some minor spotting (mostly on the hammer). The remaining surfaces retain some scattered traces of original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. The grips are very fine with some minor dings and scratches, with most of the varnish remaining. Mechanically fine. The engraving and markings are clear and crisp.

B) Good. Blue brown patina on the barrels and hammer, gray patina on the frame. The right grip is missing a chip at the screw escutcheon. The left grip shows only light wear. Mechanically good.
