A) Six barrel cluster marked "PATENTED 18?7 CAST-STEEL" on one of the flat ribs, the top of the bar hammer is marked "ALLEN'S PATENT" and the left side is marked "ALLEN & THURBER / NORWICH C-T". The matching serial number is marked on the rear of the barrel between two nipples, on the left side of the frame and hammer spring under the grip and on the inside of each grip panel. Screw on nipple shield etched with a floral design and has the standard broad scroll engraving on the frame and a scallop border on the backstrap.

B) Manufactured in the late 1840s and early 1850s, these single action pepperbox pistols were manufactured by Stocking & Co., Worcester, Mass. Marked "STOCKING & CO. WORCESTER" on one rib and "WARRANTED CAST-STEEL" followed by the eagle head proofmark on the next. The left side of the hammer is marked "PATENT SECURED 1848". The serial number is marked on the barrel between two nipples, on the left side of the frame and hammer spring under the grip and the inside of the right grip panel is stamped "32". The frame is engraved with the standard broad scroll and was equipped with a removable nipple shield which is now absent, (the screws remain). Cocking spur on the hammer and finger spur on the trigger guard. Fitted with two piece bag shaped walnut grips with German silver oval inlays.

A) About good. The barrels show traces of original finish in the protected areas of the ribs with the balance having a smooth brownish patina. The frame has a smooth mottled gray patina. The grips are revarnished with a few minor dings and dents. With exception noted above, the markings are clear. The action is fine.

B) Fair. The metal surfaces have a smooth brownish gray patina with some flash pitting on the top of the frame and on the hammer. The grips are revarnished with a few minor dings and dents. The hammer markings are readable, the remaining markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is good.
