<B>Two German Porcelain Water Ewers: Air and Water</B></I><BR><BR>Staatliche Porzellan Manufaktur Meissen, Meissen, Germany<BR>Circa 1850-1924<BR>Porcelain with polychrome enamel and gilt decoration<BR>Marks: Air: crossed swords (underglaze blue), impressed <I>327</B></I>; Water: crossed swords (underglaze blue)<BR>Air: 26 inches high; Water: 24.5 inches high<BR><BR>The ewers of ovoid baluster form with shaped everted lip; <I>Air</B></I> with modeled applied figures of a putto at base with bird on hand, a putto at shoulder blowing wind, Diana at shoulder below lip holding a scepter and wearing a crown above a peacock and two putti at handle holding and blowing into a bagpipe with additional putto head; ribbon handle; with molded decoration of cranes, clouds and feathers and painted insects at neck. <I>Water</B></I>: with applied dolphins at base, mermaid, sea serpent tail and horses, Neptune at shoulder below lip and putto atop banded reed handle, molded ship and reed decoration, painted insect decoration at neck.<BR><BR>These ewers are based on a model created by Johann Jacob Kaendler in 1741 as part of a five piece set presented to Louis XV, the model was later revised by Johann Friedrich Eberlein in 1742.<BR><BR>Based on the coloration and marks on these ewers they most likely were sold in the "white" and decorated later by an outside workshop.<BR> <B>Condition Report:</B> Normal signs of wear as appropriate with age. Restoration to figure extremities.
