Later 1947 edition of ''Gone With the Wind'' by Margaret Mitchell with two typed letters signed by her pasted in. MacMillan Company: New York: 1947. The first single-page letter reads, ''For Doctor W.B. Nance -- With sincere thanks for sending me the Chinese translation of 'Gone With the Wind' / Atlanta, Georgia / January 2, 1948''. The recipient adds a note in black ink reading, ''Received [illegible] China, 9/48 / W.B.N.'' The letter shows some toning around the edges, creasing and rippling from mounting. The second typed letter is signed ''Margaret Mitchell Marsh'', also in black ink. Letter on two delicate parchment sheets of her personal stationery which are affixed to the rear pastedown leaving a tear and missing text on the second page. Dated 2 January 1948, she thanks Dr. Nance for the Chinese translation of her book. Mitchell also types, ''Doctor Burke wrote me of your kindness in saying that you would be repaid for the Chinese copies of 'Gone with the Wind' if I would send you an inscribed American copy...I have not autographed a copy of 'Gone with the Wind' since some time early in 1937. It was not lack of appreciation of the interest of readers that forced me to stop -- it was that something over a million-and-a-half copies by that time and the volumes were reaching our house in such numbers that we didn't have time to eat or sleep. I am so very anxious to do something to show you the appreciation of your courtesy, and I hope, even if it is not an actual autographed copy, it will show you how grateful I am to you. I am mailing you immediately one of the United States editions and I am enclosing in this letter a note to you signed by me, which will be just the size to paste in the front of the copy.'' Classic novel is bound in red cloth boards with black lettering and all edges speckled red. Measures 5.5'' x 8.25'' x 2.5''. Chipping to backstrip at spine ends and fabric loss to board edges, hinges and corners. Toning to leaves. Very good.
