Two Important Silver Issues of the Ancients
Two Important Silver Issues of the Ancients. A tetradrachm of Abdera in Thrace (VF, but uniformly porous) and a stater of Aigina (test cut "C" in field; F-VF). Lot of 2 coins.

The consignor of this lot and of a number of others, reveals his enthusiasm and appreciation of history through the desire to form a general collection. Condition was not as important as the story behind the coin. Perhaps a few warts and wrinkles don't matter so much. Similar collections were built by Professor Pozzi and Arthur S. Dewing, showing the breadth of the ancient world's numismatic legacy.
As a cataloguer, it is fascinating to perceive the owner's personality through the coins which were chosen. In this consignment there is shown a sub-specialty in Biblical coinage: 30 shekels of Tyre were gathered, along with numerous "tribute pennies" and procuratorial prutot. Coins which bear dating within various eras intrigued our collector, along with the popular and diverse coinage inscribed "King Alexander" (Alexander the Great of Macedon). Now, as his coins find new homes through this present Goldberg sale, they can relate their stories to appreciative new listeners, ready to study, learn and imagine.
Estimated Value $500 - 700.
