1pp TLS by Cotton, Gallup, NM, 16 Dec. 1907 on Cotton Co. letterhead with Navajo weaver and "whirling log" designs on it. To Mose Drachman in Tucson telling him that he received a sample Drachman sent, and asking him not to come until after the inventory was finished around the first of the year. Second item is bill of sale, Gallup, NM, 29 Dec. 1900, J.L. Hubbard (see lots 356, 357) for credit for miscalculation on goat skins purchased 5 days earlier.

An Ohioan by birth, Clinton Neal Cotton moved to Ganado trading post in 1884. He, along with J.L. Hubbell, were instrumental in urging the Navajo to upgrade their weaving, particularly acquiring dyes to brighten the colors and encouraging them to use Oriental designs to appeal to the Anglo market. Cotton was involved in all aspects of weaving, even helping with breeding of sheep for a better grade of wool. Although "tampering" with the native patterns substantially changed the art, Cotton also was instrumental in marketing Navajo weavings to the East. Cotton catalogs are still in demand today. In 1894 he left the trading post life and became a wholesaler, supplying only the trading posts rather than the Indians or Anglo buyers.
