The first of these two pieces is a full size drake mallard decoy, by unknown maker, but more than likely an Illinois carver. The second is a 1/3 scale done by Otto Garren (1890-1968). Otto Garren started carving decoys at the age of 16 and by the end of his 60 year career had done between 4 and 5 thousand decoys. In addition to the gunning and decorative decoys, representing all of the waterfowl species in Illinois, he also did several hundred miniatures of various sizes, such as this piece. This particular decoy is a canvasback duck approximately 1/2 inches in length, 2 3/4 inches wide and 4 inches tall. There is a small staple on the front and the bottom is stamped "B.D.", more than likely the owners initials.

Condition: The full size decoy is very good. The colors have dulled a bit with time and there are a few minor chips in the paint, and the head appears to have been separated at one time and repaired. The miniature is also very good, with an old chip on the head and some minor wear and aging of the paint.
