Two Half Plate Ambrotypes in Unusual Cases
Two Half Plate Ambrotypes in Unusual Cases by Walter C. North, circa 1858, while located at 324 Main Street of Buffalo, New York. Offered here are two separate photos of what is likely a married couple. Each one is in a double-sided brass mat contained in a double-opening brown leather case with velvet interiors. Typically, ambrotypes are backed with a piece of dark glass and then matted into a frame and case. There is much confusion between photographers William C. North (uncle) and Walter Crane North (nephew) as they both practiced the art during the same era but in several different locations. The brass mats here are signed "W. C. North" of Buffalo. The Buffalo City Directories of 1857 and 1858 list the nephew as a practicing daguerreian at the address mentioned above. The uncle was in Cleveland at the time, thus the attribution. The cases are deteriorating but still intact, one of four clasps missing. Photos both have flaws, yet a nice pair.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
