Assay Office of Geo. E. Rogers, Successor to G.W. Bell. G.W. Bell had an assay office in the Wells Fargo office on California St. On April 16, 1866, a nitroglycerine explosion killed Bell along with 15 others and nearly leveled half a city block. A leaking box was brought in on an Eastern steamer and sent to the WF office for storage. This disaster swayed public opinion about nitroglycerine and caused Wells Fargo to no longer carry it in their coaches. These pictorial memorandums are for gold bullion deposited by Hobart Dunbar & Co. in 1868.
