Two Early Photographs of Chinese New Year Celebrations.
Two images by unidentified photographer, showing Chinese New Years celebrations, likely in San Francisco, c. late 1880s/1890s (based on the women's clothing). 4 1/4in x 7 3/8in, and 7 5/8in x 9 3/8in. Condition: Both are laid down on cardboard, and have toning/fading and scuffing. The smaller image has dark staining, and printing/image flaws; the larger image has peeling tears/losses, corner creases/losses. The smaller image was shot above street level and shows dragon dancers processing down a crowd-lined street, past a horse cart, with spectators standing on balconies. The larger image was taken at street level, at a different location, and shows the backs of a crowd gathered closely around the dragon dance, with a horse and cart, and spectators on balconies. The first dragon dance in San Francisco was performed by the Chinese community in 1860. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
