Two EF Gold Solidi of Justin I and Justinian I
Two EF Gold Solidi of Justin I and Justinian I. S. 56 and S. 140. Lot of 2 coins.

Encompassing 1700 years from Republican times through the fall of the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire in 1453, the permutations in forming a coin collection of the ancient Romans are nearly limitless. For most collectors, one coin of each emperor is still a viable solution of spanning each historical period, while studying the inscriptions, artistic treatment, economics, minting procedures, to name only a few apects.

This lot is one of 29 from such a collection, lovingly formed and studied. The owner also managed to include a few usurpers and quite a number of Byzantine solidi which cost around $35 each in the late 1960s. Based on the coin types and condition represented, the collection might well have been substantially formed from the 1960s to the 1980s. For this cataloguer, it's part of the fun to envision why a particular coin was chosen, for each coin adds to the total force of the array .
Estimated Value $475 - 625.
