Lot of 2 different. Both are lithographed by African-American lithographer GT Brown. 1) Metallic-Equator Consolidated Mining Company. "Columbus Mining Dist. Esmeralda Co. Nev." printed under title. No. 40, issued in 1881 for 70 shares to William Willis. Signed by the vice president and secretary. Not cancelled. Vignette of wagon in front of mine/mill. Columbus Mining District is Candelaria. 2) People's Ice Company. Boca, California. No. 28, issued for 5 shares to Timothy Sullivan in 1875. Pen cancelled. Vignette of ice house next to lake. Ice was a valuable commodity in the 1870's. It was used in the mines at Virginia City as the underground temperatures were as high as 140 degrees. Ice was also used to refrigerate rail cars to ship California produce to the east. The lakes near Truckee and Donner Pass would freeze over in the winters and the ice was cut into blocks and stored in the icehouse. Nine different ice companies operated at Boca alone.
