Two Derringers -A) Engraved Brown/Merrimack Arms Southerner Derringer  B) Ballard Single Shot Derrin
A) Manufactured from 1866 to 1869. The top of the barrel is marked with the Merrimack Arms two line address without patent dates. The derringer is without the "SOUTHERNER" marking. The silver plated brass frame features a scroll engraving on a punch dot background. The engraving is on the frame sides and backstrap. Matching serial number on frame and both grips.

B) Manufactured circa 1879 with a few thousand produced. Blade front sight on a barrel marked "C. H. BALLARD & Co. / WORCESTER, MASS. / PATD. JUNE 22, 1869" on the left side, and "BALLARD'S" on top, with a checkered catch below the chamber. The brass frame is fitted with smooth bird head grips. Matching serial number on frame and both grips.

A) Period refinished. The barrel retains scattered traces of blue finish mixed with a smooth dark brown patina with some extensive pitting. Traces of the barrel marking remain. The brass frame has an even aged patina with a few patches of a darker patina. The left side of the frame has some minor pitting. The right panel has an absent chip and a couple hairline cracks on the butt, otherwise the grips are good with some minor nicks on the bottom edges and some minor dings and scratches. Most of the varnish remains.

B) Good. The barrel has been cleaned at one time and now has a smooth gray patina. The frame has fine scratches from being cleaned at one time with traces of original silver remaining in the protected areas. The exposed brass has an even patina. The grips are very good with some minor scratches and a few minor dings.
