Diameter 6 1/8 in.

Each jar has a rounded base, globular body, and an effigy head raised above the rim. Both jars are painted with broad diagonal, vertical, and horizontal lined bands with stepped or serrated elements framed within. One face has pronounced orb eyes and an open mouth while the other has slit eyes and mouth. Each figure has facial paint in geometric patterns.
Writing about a number of human effigy vessels excavated at Casas Grandes, Charles DiPeso states, "The human forms represented in this group were of particular importance as cultural mirrors for not only do they demonstrate the clothing, hairdo, and facial painting styles of the period, but also the gods of their day. Those local Casas Grandes deity designs are particularly exciting because they have been recognized as belonging to the complicated Mixtecan-Puebla god pantheon of Mesoamerica. For this reason, these particular vessels are much prized by anyone who wishes to study the spread of Mesoamerican iconography into the northern frontier."

Provenance
Bonhams and Butterfields, Sale 7437E, Lot 5319, June 9, 2003.
