Essex served both the Army and Navy during a lengthy Civil War career on the western waters from the attack on Fort Henry to battling the CSS Arkansas. She was refitted and up-armored in early 1862 and participated in the successful siege of Port Hudson in July 1863. The river steamer St. Maurice was built in Louisville in 1858 and ran the New Orleans-Bayou Lafourche-Donaldsonville route on Mississippi. She was requisitioned for military service but disappears after 1863.
