To U.S. Marshall for transportation per Mr. Paul. Second is 1p, 8.5" x 11", on letterhead of Arizona mail and Stage Company, tombstone, AZ, 10 Apr. 1892. Addressed to R.H. Robert Havlin Paul (1830-1901) was reportedly a fearless and able detective. Born in Lowell, MA, his first position was as a cabin boy on a whaler at the age of 12. By the age of 19 he made his way to California, where he served in various law enforcement roles, including Wells Fargo agent, for the next 30 years. He was sent to Arizona in 1878, and elected sheriff of Pima County in 1881. He went to Colorado to bring the Earps back in 1882, but was unsuccessful in locating them. He became a special officer for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1889, and a U.S. Marshal in 1891. He retired four years later, a career spanning nearly half a century.
