A) Manufacturer: Slotter & Co Model: Pocket
Although marked as a Deringer, features are consistent with Slotter & Company production circa 1860-1863. German silver blade front sight and tang notch rear sight, "P" among zig-zags on the left side of the breech and "DERINGER/PHILADELA" on top. The Deringer address is repeated on the lock with engraving on the lock, hammer and bolster. Checkered bird's head stock with German silver furniture, most engraved and marked "44" on the rear trigger guard finial.

Condition:
Fine, showing a dark brown patina on the barrel with mild spotting, handling marks and a darker gray on the lock and tang. The hammer has been repaired. Stock is fair with a crack on the right side near the tip, the left side between the barrel and reverse plate, and a number of dents. Mechanically good.
B) Manufacturer: Bruff R P Model: Pocket
Though unmarked, the pistol has features, particularly the reverse plate associated with Richard P Bruff, a New York merchant active circa 1858-1878. Dealing in farm implements and billing himself as a "manufacturer of rifles and Deringer pistols". Blade and notch sights with scroll engraving on the breech and tang along with a pair of gold breech bands. The lock, hammer and bolster are also engraved. Checkered bird's head grip with German silver furniture and an engraved trigger guard.

Fair as refinished, showing much of a deep black color overall with mild edge wear, handling marks and pitting. A few small chips are absent from the wedge and the hammer shows repairs. The revarnished stock is fair with mild dents. Mechanically very good.
