A) Marked "SUTHERLAND RICHMOND / PATENTED / 1837 / CAST STEEL" starting from the top right flat, with "ALLENS PATENT" on the left side of the bar hammer. Samuel Sutherland was one of Ethan Allen's most productive agents, an importer and dealer as well as a gunsmith who worked for over 40 years in Richmond, Virginia. Serial number 1 matches on all major parts, including the right grip. The angle of the grip and the high placement of the mainspring tension screw dates this pistol before 1845. The frame is lightly engraved on both sides.

B) Introduced in the 1830's. Produced without sights, marked "245" on the lower left flat of the barrel and "PATENTED/ APRIL 16.1845." on the left side of the hammer. Numbered "247" on the hammer, trigger guard, left side of the front strap, and the insides of the grips. Light scroll engraving is present on the frame, and the grips are smooth ivory with a bag shaped butt.

A) Good with gray patina mixed with dents and light pitting overall. A section of metal is missing from the frame next to the hammer. The grips are good, with a crack in the left butt, small chips and minor pressure dents. Mechanically fine.

B) Good, with a mixed gray patina overall, along with scattered pitting. Grips are very good, slightly undersized with light age cracking and attractive color. Mechanically very good.
