First letter, written in ink and datelined ''Camp Butler / Newport News Aug 11 /61,'' reads in part: ''…Its a great pleasure to me to receive the many lines which i do from friends and relations in these times of truble and in an unknown state…we have just had to turn out for Gen Butler for he has just bin here and tomorrow they expect that Gen Wool will be here and we shall have to go through inspection…we have moved several times since then and whare we shall be the next i cannot gess…I think it would be equal to a circus to see a white girl for i have not seen a half dozen since i left home…'' Second letter, dated 24 August 1861, reads in part: ''…father wanted to know…how we liked Gen Butler. i don't know what to say but the old saying is give the devil his due…It seems rather unfortunate for us the battles that we have had and I gess its about the same with the rebels…they have lost as much as we have and they have greatly the advantage…i am in hopes if they have got any fighting for us to do they will commense pretty soon for i want to know how this thing is a going to be and its a hurting us on boath sides and if it lasts long it will make harder times for all of us…last night we had blank cartridges to fire you would think that there was some noise…'' Middleton mustered into Company E on 22 May 1861 and was discharged for disability on 8 August 1862. During his service the 29th Massachusetts saw action at Fair Oaks, Gaines' Mill, Savage's Station, Nelson's Farm and Malvern Hill.
