Two 18th Century American Militia Short Sabers
1) Short saber made by John Mills Sr. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New London, Virginia between 1780 and 1818. The saber has a 30 inch, unstopped single fuller blade marked "J MILLS" on the reverse. The saber has a slightly curved/cast brass D-guard, down turned quilllion, pointed brass pommel and four-sided wooden grip. 2) Late 18th century or early 19th century American short saber with curved, 29 inch single fuller blade. The obverse of the blade has an illegible makers name with "TRENT STREET/PHILLADELPHIA" address. The saber has an iron stirrup guard with shaped knuckle bow, bird's head pommel, down turned quillion and two lagnets The bone grip is crudely checkered and has two iron straps.

1) The Mills saber is in good overall condition, the blade has a dark patina with scattered and minor pitting and some nicks in the edge. The makers markings are clear. The hilt and grip are in good conditon. The saber is missing the scabbard. 2) The stirrup hilt saber is in fair condition. The blade and hilt have a dark patina with moderate pitting. The bone grip shows heavy wear. The saber is missing the scabbard.
