Two Civil War diaries by Martin F. Moore, Musician with the 13th New Hampshire Infantry, Company K. Diaries span from 1864 through the end of the war and include battle content from the Siege of Petersburg. Born in England, Moore enlisted in August 1862 and mustered out on 21 June 1865. First diary begins on 1 January 1864 and continues through 29 January 1865. Excerpts: ''[at the Battle of Petersburg] Rebs are Shelling us again...They are annoying us a Great deal here''; ''...We took 5 guns 500 Prisoners and 2 Stand of Colors. We Lost 40 out of our Regiment killed and wounded''; ''We are still in the Pits and the Rebs keep up a cross fire on our Pits. We are firing at a Rebel Battery opposite us trying to pick off the Cmmdrs. We lost one man today...The Rebels favored us with a few shells. They bursted all around us one Bursted Right in front of my tent”; “...execution of two Deserters...they had to shoot them twice before they died.'' The final pages of the 1864 diary contain lengthy descriptions of battles fought during the Siege of Petersburg. Diary measures 3” x 6”. Wear to leather covers; binding loose, though still intact. Overall, good condition. Second diary covers events throughout 1865 with an emphasis on the war's end. At the end of the diary, Moore summarizes the year in entries made in the ''Memoranda'' section: ''[About April 1865] A Remarkable Month...9th Surrender of Genl. Lee and his whole army to Genl. Grant...14th assassination of President Lincoln by John W. Booth...15th Death of President Lincoln. Andrew Johnson...becomes President of the United States...'' Leather covers, with some lose pages. Overall, good. Diaries accompanied by tintype, likely of Moore, measuring 2.75'' x 3''.
