a sublime collection of mostly anonymous enlisted men with one Company D officer tentatively identified—all candid views of soldiers engaged in various camp chores. Five cartes are back marked Frank Rowell, Prov. R.I. with one unidentified man seated on an ammunition crate showing D/10 insignia on his kepi. Another CDV depicts a private brushing his brogans inked, Preparing for inspection/Roughly Yours "33". Still another private identified as No 58/ Norman M. Mason (m/o 9/1/62) cleans his leather cartridge box and bayonet scabbard. A CDV of Pvt. John A. Price (m/o 9/1/62) leaning against a sparkling Enfield rifle with saber bayonet affixed is signed, It’s done/Price. The same caste-off wooden crate is used as a functional prop in all of the cartes imparting a decidedly casual feel to the views. One seated fellow with legs crossed wearing a sack coat and smoking cap awkwardly grasps his pipe with one hand while waiting for the camera shudder. There are two CDVs of the same unidentified private, probably the original owner of this collection. Finally, the sole officer armed with a sword is tentatively identified as 1st Lieutenant Winthrop DeWolf, Company D. The 10th Rhode Island was an emergency three-month regiment that mustered into Federal service in May 1862 to protect the Capitol. Recruited in Providence, the regiment was organized as the 1st Regiment Rhode Island National Guards. It served primarily as garrison in Ft. DeRussey in the Western approaches of the Washington defenses and mustered out in September 1862.

Condition: CDVs lightly soiled with minor wear, near VG. All are slightly bent like stereoviews.
