Tuscarora,NV - Elko County - c1890 - Wagons Hauling Ore Photograph :
Two freight teams, possibly the High Stakers, haul ore out of Tuscarora. Cabinet card photograph measures 8 1/4"x4 3/4", light tan single matte--corners are worn 8 1/2"x5 1/4", medium contrast--suffers from yellowing, focus is good. There is foxing on the photo. The back of the matte reads in pen, "High Stakers freighting team at Tuscuro, Nevada". Misspelling of Tuscarora. The location is not verified. Two twelve mule jerk lines haul wagons of ore probably to the Central Pacific Railroad in Elko. Battle Mountain, Elko, and Carlin all sought patronage with the Tuscarora mines. By 1871, Tuscarora began to boom and in 1877 there were 3 to 4 thousand inhabitants. The mining boom waned in the 1880s and 90s and fell silent by the time Nevada's second mining era started at the turn of the century. Tuscarora was named by John Beard after the North Carolinan Tribe the Tuscarora (Carlson, Nevada Place Names). Paher reports that the town was named after the Tuscarora Union Warship that served in the Civil War (Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps).
