Confederate cavalry brigadier general in the Civil War. He achieved prominence as Thomas J. ‘Stonewall’ Jackson’s cavalry commander in the Shenandoah Valley and might have been one of the most famous cavalry commanders of the war had he not been killed in battle in 1862. Signed book: Regulations for the Army of the United States 1857. NY: Harper and Brothers, 1857. Hardcover, 4.75 x 7.5, 457 pages. Signed on the first free end page, “Turner Ashby.” In good condition, with scattered toning, soiling, and foxing to signed page, ink staining to opening fore edges (mirrored on to the signed page), light foxing to remaining pages, tear to cloth along front joint, cloth worn and torn at corners, and heavy fading and rubbing to covers and spine (rendering spine text extremely faint). From the condition, it would appear that Ashby had no hesitation in using this book. An uncommon offering from a prominent casualty of war.
