Turned eyes. Daguerreotype by JacobsEarly hands-in-vest pose of a man with turned eyes, signed "E. Jacobs" on the stippled octagonal mat of this 1/6 plate. Pen inscription on the inside back of the case reads "Taken in New Orleans on the 27th Aug. 1846 when I was 27 years old as a present for my mother in Massachusetts. -- S. Hopkins, Jr. -- By Jacobs & Co. No. 1 Camp St." This is on an E. White "Finest Quality" plate. An early white seal still adheres to the back, but is not sealed to the glass. Case has rose silk pad, original though weak spine.
