Turn-of -The Century Colt Single Action Army Revolver
Colt Single Action Army revolver manufactured in 1899. The revolver has the 'smokeless powder frame' introduced about serial number 180,000 and transverse cylinder pin. The revolver has a high polish, commercial blue, barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap and casehardened frame, loading gate and hammer. The hammer has short, borderless, fine knurling on the spur with no underlying slash below the knurling. The two-piece, black, hard rubber, stocks are checkered and have the Rampant Colt trademark in an oval at the top. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A.-" in one line. "45 COLT." is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel and the caliber designation "45" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel in front of the frame. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date/two-line' patent markings followed by the encircled Rampant Colt trademark. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "804" and the cylinder is not marked. The serial number, "187079" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The number "10" is neatly stamped on the bottom of the backstrap behind the serial number. The significance of this non-factory marking is unknown. "XXX" is lightly scratched on the inside of both stocks; this appears to be a factory assembly mark. The right rear trigger guard has a factory rework mark which writer believes to be the explanation for the later production hammer being present on the revolver as everything else is original.

Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: hard rubber
Serial Number: 187079

Very fine. The revolver retains approximately 85% of the original blue and casehardened finish. There is light holster wear on the barrel at the muzzle and on the sides of the ejector housing. There are some small spots of light pitting on the top of the barrel and ejector housing. The contact points on the grip straps and trigger guard have a blue-gray patina. The frame and hammer have about 70% of the original casehardened finish with some silvering on the top of the later production hammer (see above) and the sides of the loading gate and recoil shield. The bore is bright. The markings are sharp. The stocks are in fine condition with very minor handling wear. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is a very fine example of a turn-of-the-century Colt Single Action Army revolver with early smokeless powder frame.
