Tuolumne County Water Company
Stock number 3048 issued May 13, 1859 to Edgar Mills brother of Darius Ogden Mills. Signed by Edgar on the reverse. The Mills family invested widely in the early economic development of California. Their interests included land development, farming, mining, water, railroads, etc. After 1873, D. O. Mills relocated to New York but continued to be widely invested in California. His brother, Edgar, remained in Sacramento and took care of the family interests until his death in 1893. Entire left side Vignette shows miners using water in various forms. With the discovery of gold in Tuolumne county in 1848, and subsequent mining areas and camps that came into being, there was a clear need for a steady water supply. This was the first water company formed in the county in 1852, in response to that need. The water came from the South Fork of the Stanislaus River. Within 2 years the Columbia and Stanislaus River Company was founded as competition, taking its water from the Main Fork of the Stanislaus River. It was organized because of the exorbitant rates the Tuolumne County Water Co. Was charging. In the late 1800s water disputes were very common and they sometimes led to fighting and even murder [Ref: www.tchistory.org/TCHISTORY/Wonders_14.htm]. City: ColumbiaCounty: TuolumneState: CA
