Blk border/print, beautiful vignette down left side showing travel from the water source to the shores, right side filigree vignette of 2200 shares, $550,000, $250 each. Second cert. #2738 issued to Edgar Mills Feb 7, 1856. Both cert. are in excellent cond, no pin holes, tears or major staining. TRi-fold is visible. Britton & Rey printers.
The recipients are bros. D.O Mills was a prominent American banker and philanthropist and was once considered to Califís wealthiest citizen. He established the first banking house in Calif., Gold Bank of D.O. Mills, founded the Bank of Claif in 1864, built the Mills Hotel, part owner of V& T RR, served as trustee AMerican Museum of Natural History, Metro Art Museum, American Geo. Society.
Edgar mills made the first surveys of the Feather and Sacremento Rivers. Entered the banking business w/brother D.O. With his brother James they established the Scaremento Bank of Columbia in Tuolumne County. California Ken Prag Collection
