Lot of four. 1) Stock: Tuolomne Co. Water Co. Issued to Jack Grazier Dec. 19, 1854. Signed by Secr. And Pres. The water company was an early need in the Columbia, CA area as the mine area became "dry diggings". The company subsequently funded a ditch from the Stanislaus River to maintain the water needs of the community. Columbia became an incorporated town in May of 1854. This document, issued in the winter of that year is an early document of the success of the community at this early stage of its incorporation. Ornate vignette of men working mine area using water flow from flumes to separate. Bridge over small creek with approaching stage in distance at bottom. Good (tear through middle of issued name). 10" x 6". 2) Stock: Tuolomne Co. Water Co. issued to L Kendle Jan. 16, 1855. No vignette. Western typeface titling at top. "Wilson Collection" stamped in blue at left. Fine. 6.75" x 3.25". 3) Stock: Banking House, Don Pedro's Bar. Unissued. 1854. Ornamental border at left. Fine. Small tear at bottom, fold at left of border. 10.5" x 4". 4) Stock: banking House, Montezuma. Unissued. 1854. Ornamental border at left. 3 and 4 could be a part of the businesses in operation prior to the burning down of much of the timber built town by H. "Babe" Crowell on July 10, 1854. Prior to the fire, the town was known to have had 4000-5000 inhabitants. Saloons, Hotels, a number of banks, dry goods stores and theaters had been established. After the fire, only a few remaining brick buildings still stood. The town quickly rebuilt throughout 1854.
