Truong Tan (born 1963), Chalk Drawing, ‘Don’t cry for me!’
This drawing in white in red chalk on black cardboard was created by the Vietnamese artist Truong Tan. In his works, Tan addresses prejudices that prevail in the tradition-bound society of Vietnam. Based on his own experience, the artist examines images of homosexuality in a conservative environment. This approach becomes eminent in ‘Don’t cry for me!’, a homoerotic drawing. Three men are depicted in simple contours – a characteristic of Tan’s drawing style. In a drastic imagery, the artist, who also identifies himself as an anti-aids-activist, points at the dangers of unprotected intercourse. The Vietnamese artist feels freer in Europe with regards to his artistic freedom of expression, thus, besides Hanoi, he also lives and works in Paris.



The drawing ‘Don’t cry for me!’ by Truong Tan is signed on the lower right ‘Truong Tan’, and titled in the centre ‘Don’t cry for me!’. The drawing is in very good condition with merely slight traces of storage. The dimensions of the sheet are 50 x 64.9 cm.



Truong Tan (born 1963)

Truong Tan was born in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, in 1963, where he studied at the University of Fine Arts. In his oeuvre the homosexual artist tries to break with sexual and traditional conventions. He lives and works in Paris and Hanoi. He has had solo exhibitions for example at the Kunsthalle in Bielefeld (1996) and at the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin (1999). Furthermore, he was represented at the Singapore Biennale (2008) and in a group exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (2011). Some of his works are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum.
