Truman & Dewey: Dewey Defeats Truman
Truman & Dewey: A Fine Example of the Famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" Jump to Conclusions by the Chicago Tribune. One of the most endearing and avidly collected mementoes of the politics of the mid 20th century. The pro-Republican Chicago Tribune, combining excessive optimism with the desire to get a jump on the competition, rushed into print their November 3rd 1948 edition proclaiming Dewey to be the victor. Late returns from California tipped the balance to Truman, and the rest is history. Truman was photographed beaming and holding up a copy of the Tribune, probably the most iconic political photograph of the 20th century. Interestingly, the same phenomenon occurred in 1916, as several different newspapers proclaimed Republican Charles Evan Hughes to be the victor; however once again late results from California gave the election to Woodrow Wilson.

The present "Dewey Defeats Truman" example was carefully stored away and appears never to have been opened. Aside from even, light age browning on the exposed front page, it is in near mint condition. While it has been stored folded in half, there has been no deterioration along the fold line, and it appears that the paper could be safely opened if one wished to frame it showing the full front page. Dimensions: 16.5" x 23".

Shipping: Rolled (view shipping information)
