Troxell, Hyla A. THE NORMAN DAVIS COLLECTION. The American Numismatic Society. 1969. 4to. (4), 53, (3) pages. New York. original brown printed card covers. 28 fine plates of coins. Fine. The first installment in the American Numismatic Society's Ancient Coins in North American Collections series. Assembled over the past two decades, the Norman Davis Collection comprises examples of the major coinages of the Greek world. It is noteworthy not only for the consistently high standard of style and condition but also for special series and individual rarities. The Seleucid and Indo-Greek sequences are particularly impressive, and any museum would be proud to possess unique specimens like the stater of Melos (no. r8r), the tetradrachm of Heliocles of Bactria (no. 307) and the tetradrachm of Ptolemy IV (no. 332). Many of the coins have been illustrated in enlargement in Mr. Davis' recent book, Greek Coins and Cities; approximately one hundred of them are on permanent display at the Seattle Art Museum. The publication conforms to the general format of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum fascicules in placing emphasis on the reproduction of the coins and limiting the text to basic numismatic data. References and dates are given only when there has been a thorough mint study of a particular coinage. Earlier publications of individual coins have been noted in some cases but no comprehensive search of sale catalogues has been undertaken. All weights are in grams and all coins are silver unless otherwise indicated. The American Numismatic Society presents the Norman Davis Collection as the first in a projected series of publications, recording material of numismatic value which is not readily accessible or perhaps even known to exist. It is hoped that other private collectors and institutions will follow Mr. Davis' example in making their holdings available to the scholar. Important. Lot weight: 0 lbs 13oz. Subject(s): Ancient Coinage.
