Triplett, Frank. THE LIFE, TIMES AND TREACHEROUS DEATH OF JESSE JAMES - LEGENDS OF THE WEST. Barnes & Noble Books, New York. 1992. 8vo. xxxviii, 344, (2) pages. original russet leatherette, gilt, jacket. Facsimile reprint of the 1882 edition. English text. The David Baker Library. Fine. Controversy has surrounded Triplett's book for almost ninety years since its first appearance even prior to its appearance.
Published originally the month following Jesse James murder in 1882, THE LIFE, TIMES AND TREACHEROUS DEATH OF JESSE JAMES allegedly relied heavily upon two important primary sources: Jesse's wife and Jesse's mother. They disputed Triplett's claim for their participation in the writing of the book, but later sued the publisher for non- payment of their royalties.
Controversy continued. Triplett's book was favorable toward Jesse James, but much less favorable toward Missouri's Governor Crittenden, and this fact has led many to suspect that the governor was behind the book's disappearance. Wright Howes says in U. S. IANA, 'It is alleged that efforts were made to suppress this biography. The scarcity of all issues tends to confirm this.
This present reprint of Triplett's book brings to the public a work of both historical value and personal interest, made more significant historically by Joseph Snell's editorial contributions and made more interesting by the passing years which have continued the facts and the legends of the most renowned outlaw of America's West Jesse James.
