Transforming the West, from the Santa Fe Trail to manufacturing coke. Cabinet card photograph measures 7 5/8”x4 1/2”, tan single matte 7 7/8”x 5”, high to medium contrast—suffers from some fading on the edges, and the focus is sharp. There is also some foxing on the upper left and upper right. Minor wear on the corners. The photographers, identified on the reverse of the card as Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Miller, worked on 632 North Commercial Street in Trinidad. They operated there between 1893 and 1897 (Mangan). Before it was a town the site was a popular camp for people on the Santa Fe Trail. A permanent settlement was established in 1859 and the town soon developed. Named after Trinidad Baca, daughter of Filipe Baca, it soon established itself as a cow town. When the West changed from horse power to steam engine, the town found its real economic bonanza. In 1879, coke production began in the state, and with large coal seams in the Trinidad District, the town soon flourished.
