Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin Doc. Signed
Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin Document Signed “Albert Gallatin”. Three pages, 8” x 10”, printed document, January 14, 1809, signed by Gallatin at the closing and at the address leaf. This circular was issued by the Treasury Department as an addendum to the Embargo Act of 1807, an unpopular and ineffective embargo aimed at punishing the British and French but ending up punishing the American people. The act was repealed three days before President Thomas Jefferson left office. This particular copy was sent to William R. Lee, the tax collector of Salem, Massachusetts. Abraham Alphonse Albert Gallatin (1761-1849) is the longest serving Treasury Secretary to date. In addition to his political, diplomatic and civil service contributions, Gallatin also founded New York University. The document on offer has suffered loss at the edges, has toned uniformly but most especially at the edges, and there is some moderate staining that negligibly affects the text. Gallatin's signatures are faded but legible. The document is fragile but is still in good condition overall.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
